Hey everyone, I know I said that this debate would most likely be about China, but it will not be ^_^ The questions: 1. Should people who sell products made from GMOs be required to inform the consumer? 2. Are GMOs helping or hindering society and should they continue to be produced? For your responses, focus on either one of the questions or both of the questions at the same time. They both involve GMOs which is why I have them together, but they both involve different topics surrounding them. As always, I'll be staying neutral and if need be, will offer some sub-questions to drive the discussion if needed. Edit: I have the next debate topic picked for #NextWeekUnlessOtherwiseAsked and it will be on

but acqui, there has to be a big difference between using natural selection and growing infertile fruits that have "plant AIDS" on a lab. At the very least we should label GMO products, just like we label "Hormone-Free" eggs.

Naturally. Food is kinda important. Consumers deserve to know what's in their food. If it's GMOs, they deserve to know such. As for whether GMOs are good for society... I'm inclined to say yes, they are good for agricultural productivity. They are therefore also good to society, and thus should continue to be produced.

Here's a question to think about. Currently, products that do not have GMOs tend to say that on their packaging. They use this as a marketing ploy saying "Buy my product because we have no GMOs." Is it really necessary to place a GMO label on products that contain them when every other product that does not contain them says so?

GMO's are great if you grow in a controlled enviroment. The danger of using GMOs consists of letting these mutations spread into the natural selection and pretty much kill our ecological system. They are however good for productivity, especially in areas which lack some of the necessities for large-scale farming(IE dry, cold, dark). But just like there are notices for products containing caffeine and alcohol any artificial installation of additional mutations(That is to say, by definition GMO) should have that written on the packaging for the people who wish to be afraid of GMO. They should also be thoroughly tested(3-6 months) on animals or otherwise before being sold in markets, just in case they start producing some wacko poison.

I wanted to create this topic... stop using your advanced american tech to read peoples minds!
Yes. Information is always required, just as every product on the back have text giving us information what resources and substance they used to create a product. In Russia GMO is allowed recently and GMO producers and sellers are required to label GMO products: 10% of product front should be black with words 'this product contains gmo'. Usually upper left corner.
GMO products can survive various events natural seed & food cannot. Like parasites, insects, viruses, bacterias, rain, cold, snow, specific climate. But they contain cancerogene materia or (artificially) modified bio which can cause illness or simply harm human organism, especially weak ones like babies, children, elderly or humans with long-term health problems. Nautral seeds and food products are healthier, but they struggle to survive various things i mentioned above. I support GMO continue to work, because if you ban it, they will go underground just like alcohol in prohibiton era. There they can intimidate farmers, bribe politicians to change laws like gansters.
